Detonate started as basement sessions in Nottingham in the late 1990s and has since run nights at Stealth, Rescue Rooms, Rock City, The Brickworks, Unit 13 and the Motorpoint Arena, plus its own festival at Colwick Park.

Stealth, which opened in 2004, holds around 660 people over two floors. Rock City has been open since 1980, and David Bowie played there in 1997 on the tour for Earthling, his drum & bass album. The Nest at Notts County FC now hosts the large Groovebox x Submerged shows.
